Chaturmas is observed for a period of 4 months and it begins from the day after Deva Sayana Ekadasi in Ashada month and ends on Utthana Ekadasi in Kartik Month. This year Chaturmas dates start from July 10 and end on November 5. To many communities, these 4 months are of great importance. The months are dedicated to prayers, rituals, and worship and therefore marriages, griha pravesh, and other similar functions are not observed.

 

At this time saints and celestial beings don’t move around, they do meditation and tapas in one place. There is a popular belief that all the sacred rivers and ponds in the world arrive at Braj Mandal for four months. People visit Vrindavan and Mathura during the period.
Shravan is the first month of Chaturmas. Which is dedicated to Lord Shiva, especially Mondays. Then comes Bhadrapada next month in the calendar, in this month there are festivals that include the Krishna Ashtami & Ganesh Chaturthi. Then comes Ashwin month and the important festivals include Durga Puja, Navratri, Diwali, etc. Finally, Kartik, Diwali celebrations end this month.

How to do or observe Chaturmas Vrat?

There are no such rules regarding the Chaturmas Vrat. It is often left to the devotee to decide, what they want to do or how they want to spend the four months. Worship Lord Vishnu, the nurturer to remove the sins of your past life, with an Online Vishnu Puja.

  • In these four months, some people avoid non-vegetarian food.
  • Some people observe flexible fasting, for example- eating just one meal on particular days in the month.
  • Most people decided to read different holy text like the Mahabharata, Ramayana or Gita etc. During the fourth month period.
  • Some people make it a point to visit holy places or temples daily and indulge in religious and spiritual activities.
  • These four months are very importance for all the Vishnu devotees because this period is known as the night of Vishnu.
  • Vishnu devotees listen to his stories and spend time in helping the poor and in cleaning and maintaining Vishnu temples.
  • Some people performing the vrat wake up early in the morning before the sunrise .
  • Some Sleeping on floor, as its consider very good.
  • Mauna Vrat is another things which people do during this vrat.
  • One must avoid anger, greed and bad feelings.
  • On the last last day of this vrat, one has to give food, clothes to Brahmins as dakshina and get their blessings.

The four months are:
Shravan, Bhadrapada, Ashwin, Karthik

The Four Type of Vrath on Chaturmas

1)Shaka Vrata – First month of Chaturmas Vrat

The first month of Chaturmas Vrat is called Shaka Vrata. This Vrata begins on Ashada month in Shukla Paksha Dwadasi day in and ends on Shravan month in Shukla Ekadasi day. This year Shaka Vrata starts from July 11 and ends on August 8.

All kinds of dal or pulses like rajma, moong dal etc, are consumed during this period. Black pepper, curd, jeera, ghee, rava, milk, sesame and butter are consumed. And Vegetables and fruits are not consumed during Shaka Vrata.

These four months of Chaturmas Vrat is kept to flush out toxins and regain health. Due to this reason in this four month different items are avoided in different months.

2) Dadhi Vrata

Dadhi Vrata is consider to be the second month of Chaturmasya Vrata. Dadhi Vrata begins on Shukla Paksha Dwadashi day in Sravana month  and ends on Bhadrapada month Shukla Paksha Ekadashi day. On should avoid eating card. Dadhi Vrata in 2022 begins on August 9 ends on September 6.

3)Ksheera Vrata

Ksheera Vrata is observed during the 3nd month of the Chaturmas and is observed mainly in South India by certain Hindu communities. The month long Vrata is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Ksheera Vrata in 2022 begins on September 7 ends on October 6
During this one month any kind of food prepared using milk like butter or ghee or kheer etc, are avoided by Hindu communities that observe the Chaturmasya Vrata.

4) Dwidala Vrat

Dwidala Vrat is part of the Chaturmasya Vrata and is the 4rd phase of the four-month Chaturmas Vrat. Dwidala Vrata begins on the Dwadashi day in Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month and ends with Kartik Shukla Ekadasi. This year Dwidala Vrat starts from October 7 and ends on November 4. Dwidala Vrata is even known as Bhaubeej Vrat.
