Physical Properties of Blue Sapphire
Species of Blue Sapphire is corundum, is simply crystallized alumina (Al2O3) and in pure form it is devoid of color. Sapphires are found in various colors which include pink, blue, green, yellow, orange and Colorless etc. Blue Sapphire is known as Neelam. It has a specific gravity of 4.00. Refractive Index is 1.76 – 1.77 and the hardness is 9 on the Moh’s scale, Optic Character is DR 0.008.

Identification of Blue Sapphire
Natural Sapphires carry within them clear signs of slow crystallization. Some of the external elements sometimes remain preserved in the Gem which helps its identification. Like all other precious gems it should have inclusions which should be visible to the naked eye or under magnification. Otherwise, it is a piece of glass or a synthetic substance.
The inclusions are generally like ‘feathers’ or are like finger print impressions. Liquid inclusions looking like lace are also sometimes visible. Synthetic Sapphires are very common in the market and many traders in order to earn fast money sell them as originals. These are very clear and under magnification show bubble like inclusions. Sometimes feather like inclusions have also seen but they shine abnormally under light.
Wearing Method of Blue Sapphire
Its very important before wearing any gemstone we should know it’s methods and importance for every stone. It should be washed with fresh milk and holy water ( Ganga Jal – found in Indian river named Ganga ) in the morning during Hora ( a type of Muhurt time ) of Saturn planet on Saturday , its the most preferable day to wear Blue Sapphire, and then while chanting the mantra it should be worn. Blue Sapphire should be used in Gold, Silver, White Gold, Platinum and Panchdhatu ( mixture of five metal ), middle finger of right hand (for male), in left hand (for female) or in neck also. The weight of Blue Sapphire should not be less than 2 Ratti ( one type scale of Indian weight ) or onwards in weight. More the weight of Blue Sapphire, greater its effect.
